purge

those who know me well know i have very few belongings. lately, i've gone from very few possessions to very, very few possessions. i like it that way and have spent the last few months in serious purge mode.

this morning i set out a bunch of stuff directly outside my office. i got some boxes, put some colorful tapestries over them, and placed a number of magazines (mostly the nation) on one box and a ton of cassette tapes on the other two.

above the boxes of stuff, i placed a sign that said, "free stuff."

there was some really good stuff up in there: led zep's houses of the holy and II, some pavement, bjork, and neil young, some tribe called quest, de la soul, and del, vivaldi's four seasons (!), and some great mixed tapes from some old co-op parties in the late 1980s.

nearly everything got taken within a few hours. i was somewhat surprised that the nirvana tape went unclaimed. i wasn't surprised that the two joan sutherland tapes didn't find a new home.

update: i forgot to mention that i was also surprised that janes addiction's nothing's shocking wasn't taken. that tape rocks!

I always seem to miss the "free stuff days", which is sad, but I still think it's a great idea and I'm sure all the students love it. I think students love free stuff in general...at least in Austria they do.

jen: i'll try to have another free stuff day before i leave!

thanks, anonymous, but for the record, the joan sutherland tapes were my grandfather's, not mine.

david michael.

giving away your grandfather's tapes? whaaa?

shouldn't this headline read: gone. or are you reserving that for white men?

you better not give away those acc pogs that i gave you. they were a token of our "one true love." (cue colin meloy). and they are now totallly ebayable since the ACC has reconfigured.

q: i've got grandpa's gloves, a scarf, and a beautiful pea coat. and i've got a painting my grandma sketched of my grandpa. and i've got his poems. but i had to draw the line somewhere and, well, the joan sutherland tapes didn't make the final cut. =)

as for the ACC pogs. oh. mi. god. I LOVE THOSE POGS! you gave me two: i saved one and purged the other.

DUDE!! I knew I should have given you the Tool cover of No Quarter sooner--that way I KNOW you would have brought the Houses of the Holy to class for me . . . or at least let me know that it was gonna be part of the Free Fountain that seems to run outside your office. If not before, see you Wednesday.
